Salt in its purest form (rock salt) is an Evaporate (sedimentary rock) formed by salt deposits from shallow oceans in a pure sediment form, later crystallizing and forming a rock far underground due to heat and pressure. Elements Found in Rock Salt and Crystal Salt
Sodium chloride makes up 97% of rock salt. Other elements include magnesium, iron, boron, potassium, sulphur, calcium and manganese. One physical property of rock salt is that the ionic elements in the rock, either bound in crystal structure or bound electronically between crystals, can be freed from the rock to be absorbed by the human body. At Salt Cave Santa Barbara we use a Halogenerator to facilitate this process and supply the cave with the fine, dry salt particles (1-5 micron in size), which are negatively charged for additional health benefits. Halotherapy (or dry salt therapy) is a natural and effective way to improve respiratory health. Seasoning food with Himalayan salt also allows the spectrum of 84 minerals and trace elements in the salt to be absorbed. It is thought that warm Himalayan salt rock lamps release immunity enhancing ionic forms of sodium or chloride (negative ions into the atmosphere, further promoting health and well-being.

Our two cave rooms are built from 100 percent rock salt in its natural crystalline form. The rock is sourced from the Himalayan Mountain foothills located in the Khewra Salt Range in the Punjab Province of central Pakistan. Alexander the Great reportedly discovered the Khewra Salt Range in approximately 320 BC. The salt in this location is approximately 250 million years old.
